Flats for Spring

On a recent trip to Las Vegas, my adorable and very fashionable friend Tara was unexpectedly caught in a downpour coming out of a show on the strip-while wearing incredibly high heels. After several near falls, she very sensibly ducked into an Ann Taylor store and swapped her heels for these flats. She loves them, and they're now her go-to shoes. I love the simple, elegant design, I think these are so rich looking. I love the slightly squared toe too, it makes them a little more unique looking. At $98, they're a great price. I think I might need these in my Spring wardrobe, they would look great with everything from cropped khaki's to circle skirts.

Yet another fabulous email came in from Saks the other day and I have purposely left it in my inbox so I can stare longingly at another beautiful Diane Von Furstenberg creation. This woman designs just absolutely stunning and amazing dresses. She really just understands what looks good on a woman's body and incorporates amazing prints and silhouettes.

I was literally speechless when the email came in featuring this new DVF masterpiece.

I tried to find it online, but apparently I am not the only one who loved this dress since you can only preorder it from Saks (and in a print which I am not exactly in love with). I love the drapery of the fabric, and especially in the back, where I feel like a lot of designers ignore the "walkaway" look. I want people to be just impressed when I walk away as when I walk towards them. I also think the plunging neckline is sexy without overdoing it. And really, its a great flattering fit, where I wouldn't feel like I was bulging out everywhere. I could see myself wearing this on the streets of Greece in summertime. Unfortunately, I can only love DVF from afar or at my desk, since this dress costs a cool $495. Oh, and if you want to look exactly like the model, you can also pick up those great Jimmy Choos she is sporting on her feet for another $950. So, for the low, low price of $1,445, you too can look like the girl who popped in my inbox the other day.

My fave new Spring dress

Oh my gosh, I need this dress by Marc by Marc Jacobs. Seriously, need. This is exactly what I want to wear this Spring. Love the pattern, love the colors, love the banded waist, the full skirt, the puffed sleeves, the pockets (yes, you guys, it has pockets!). Eh...not so crazy about the price. $328 at Shopbop, and I'm sure worth every penny (sigh!).

Pajama Jeans

Just saw this article about "pajama jeans"--basically lounge pants styled like denim.

"The aptly named PajamaJeans are made of a mixture of cotton and spandex with a gray jersey lining to provide a snug and relaxed fix, complete with pockets and rivets to give the illusion of trendy denim."

I can't really tell what they look like from the picture, but I kind of like this idea! Immediately when I get home from work, I change into sweatpants and look like a total slob. This jean/sweatpants hybrid seems like a more presentable option. They're $40. I have no reaction to this price because my reaction depends so heavily on the pants. I can't tell if you would actually want to wear these out of the house, in which case $40 seems quite reasonable, or if they should be relegated to the house, in which case, $40 seems like a lot for cute sweatpants. Either way, I am very intrigued. Anything that would let me wear jersey pants out of the house is going to get my stamp of approval.

Nars Spring Makeup Collection

I just checked out the new Nars Spring makeup line, and it got me very excited about makeup that I have absolutely no place to wear. Actually, that's not fair--most of it looks extremely wearable and PRETTY, like the gorgeous beigy pink lipstick. But my eye went straight to the electric blue glitter eyeliner. Here's the description from the Sephora website:

"Inspired by New York's infamous 1970s discos, these chunky crayons of translucent color are laced with glitter and can be worn on the eyes, cheeks, lips, and body."

Oh my gosh, it's enough to make me want to hop the next plane to Vegas. Sadly, the only place I have to wear it to is daycare, so probably not too practical for my lifestyle, but let me tell you, 10 years and a baby ago, I would have rocked this. Love the bright violet nail polish and hot pink lip gloss too, but I'm pretty sure I can find a Wet n' Wild version of both.

I agree completely with Kari's post below...those shoes are incredible and I am sure I would wear them everyday for at least 4 days. I have a very short attention span.
However, with Kari's latest blog, I realized that winter is once again coming to an end and with that tall boots. Now I know you can transition your tall boots into Spring but this is Texas people. In just a few short weeks, it will be 85 and I would probably catch on fire in tall boots. So with the inevitable hotter weather arriving in a few weeks, I realized another fall/winter season has passed without me having acquired a pair of tall, grey boots. See the Harlot "Rake" boot below, available at Nordy's (aka Mecca).

I am obsessed with tall grey boots ever since I saw a picture of Hayden P. wearing a pair with skinny jeans. Infact, I already own the pair of skinny Hudsons, but my dynamic waist measurements have been holding me back. I love the versatility of the grey boots. I like to think I would wear them with my skinny Hudsons, with a long open cardigan, and my Rayban aviator sunglasses, with the papparazzi chasing me and taking my picture as I sip Starbucks and stroll around the celebrity hotspot that is San Antonio. I suppose there is always hope for next year. Sigh.

Is it Spring yet?

So, I was checking out The Sartorialist, as I always do (and you should too! amazing, gorgeous street style pics that will instantly make you feel both underdressed and undercool), and I fell in love with this whole look. It's so simple, but just effortless. But I am obsessed with her flat strappy leather sandals. They look totally natural and comfortable and I'm pretty sure I would wear them all the time. I have a feeling this girl bought hers in, like, a little shop in the Greek Isles where an elderly man cobbles them by hand. I will be hoping to find something similar at DSW. I feel like J.Crew used to have sandals that looked exactly like this, but I guess they've moved on to fancier shoes (see Joc's post yesterday). No luck so far, but I'm hoping it's because it's so early in the year, so I will keep you posted on my quest!

Long Time Shopper, First Time Blogger

Hello world! First of all, I should introduce myself. My name is Jocelyn and I am a friend of Kari's, who has graciously allowed me to become a co-blogger. I feel so incredibly honored and I hope that I can only blog to just half of Kari's capabilities!

Now let me first say that I just feel so 2010. I feel very techy...like I should be living in San Fransisco, sipping a nonfat latte and wearing black rimmed glasses. Instead, I am sitting on my couch in San Antonio, hair pulled back in a funky ponytail and drinking Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper.

So for my first blog ever...I get daily emails from a plethora of retailers and today I received "Jenna's Picks" from J. Crew. Now usually, I don't really agree with Jenna and although I love J. Crew, I sometimes find the items a little bit pricey for what you get. But today were a few pairs of shoes that I wished I could have reached into my computer screen and yanked out and immediately put on my feet.

Welcome Dani Neon Leather Heels. Give me a peeptoe and a retro looking heel and I am a happy girl. I love the neon strap and how it makes them a little edgier. Unfortunately, since they run for $235, it will be a while before I am prancing around my office in these cuties.

Okay, I am now going to admit to my blogging ignorance. I would like to post an additional pair but my computer is not cooperating. I will need to get a lesson from Master Kari. More later!

Drugstore Find: Mineral Foundation

Okay, first, sorry for the complete lack of blogs for the past few months. I'm going to try and do better now!

So, you guys know I love my Smashbox mineral makeup, but on Christmas Eve, I ran out. There was no way I was going to brave the mall on Christmas Eve, so I headed to CVS instead! I picked up this Maybelline Mineral Power Powder Foundation. Um, I'm still using it. I actually really like it. The color is really natural, the coverage is great, and it's pretty long lasting. I definitely like it as well, or possibly a little better, than the bare escentuals bare minerals foundation. I do not like it as well as Smashbox, but...it's $8! I mean seriously. The one thing I do NOT like about it is the brush that comes with the foundation, so I strongly recommend you find a good brush you like. (I LOVE my Smashbox brush...yes, at $50 it's crazy expensive, but I think it makes all makeup look better.) If you're looking for a good mineral foundation, I would definitely recommend it.

Nordstrom Rack Grand Opening!

Sorry for the lack of posts, readers, my real job has been pretty busy lately and I just have been too exhausted. BUT wanted to at least post ONCE this week, and what better topic than the grand opening of Nordstrom Rack at Gateway on October 22?? Here are the details:

At the grand opening we will hold our 'Race Through the Rack' sweepstakes. One lucky person will be chosen to be the first customer to enter the store and have 90 seconds to select up to $2,000 worth of merchandise. Arrive early—the drawing will be at 8:45am in advance of the 9am grand opening. The first 1,000 customers will receive a Nordstrom Rack tote bag as a gift with their opening day purchase.

Okay, the tote bag I have to tell you does not excite me, but if anything can get me to stand in line for a store opening, it's a shopping spree.

Vera Wang Rock Princess Fragrance

So a few weeks ago my friend Kim was in town from Dallas visiting, and of course, we headed straight to the mall to shop. We were crusing through the fragrance counter when we spotted this sort of crazy looking black bottle. It was Vera Wang Rock Princess. We both sprayed it on and were completely enraptured by it. As we kept shopping, periodically one of us would just stop midsentence and say "...we smell sooo good!"

I am terrible at identifying fragrances, so here's the (very weird, actually, in my opinion) description from Sephora:

Each verse is equally captivating in the dark, fruity scent that channels
sultry rock-star attitude. It takes the stage with an exhilarating intro of
succulent white peach, bittersweet red raspberry, and an illuminating flash of
vibrant bergamot. The chorus reveals itself in lovely layers of ultra-feminine
florals. Hypnotic heliotrope, vintage-inspired rose, night-blooming jasmine,
delicate lily, and an unexpected riff of sharp, spicy accents. The melody
bridges to a finale, cloaking the essence in the warm, sensual glow of plush

I don't know about all that, but it seriously smells amazing, sort of sweet and musky at the same time (I know...I could not write for the Sephora fragrance department).

Don't let the bottle scare you, it sort of looks like it's designed for a goth teenager, but I think you'll really like the fragrance. It's $72, so I'm hoping someone will buy it for me as a gift (so wish my husband read this blog!).

Sweater Boots - Separated at birth!

When I was in Wyoming at the Texas/Wyoming game a few weeks ago, an adorable Wyoming fan was wearing these Ugg sweater boots over jeans, and I loved the whole look, just totally cozy and comfy. They're adorable, but they're $140, and I'm just not prepared to pay that for sweater boots. Maybe if I lived in Wyoming, but how often can you really wear sweater boots in Texas??

Well, imagine my surprise and delight when I saw this incredibly similar pair at Old Navy. I mean seriously, these look almost identical to the Ugg pair. And at $34.50, the price is much easier to justify.

Clinique Mineral Makeup

You guys know I love my Smashbox mineral makeup, with its awesome delivery system by which you shave off just the amount you need--so much neater than traditional mineral makeups, which just get everywhere, especially when you try and travel with them.

Well, Clinique has entered the mineral makeup fray with their Superbalanced Makeup, which has identical packaging to my Smashbox fave. And it's $34.50 for 18g, versus the Smashbox, which is $59 for 21g, so it's quite a bit cheaper. My friend Shelly, a girl who knows her makeup and a fellow mineral makeup devotee (she got me into bare minerals to begin with), tried this and really likes it.

Here's the thing: the Smashbox version has all sorts of vitamins and antioxidants in it, and supposedly reduces the appearance of wrinkles. And I feel like it really works! My skin responds really well to it. And I feel like my skin really glows after I use it. So I'm not sure if the Clinique version will do the same thing or not. But at that much of a price difference, I think I'm going to try it once I run out of Smashbox. If anyone has used the Clinique version, or if you've used both Clinique and Smashbox, let me know what you think!

Skinny Cords

Well, I like my Martin + Osa skinny jeans so much, I'm now seriously considering these velvet slim jeans! They're the same slim fit as my jeans, which I love because they are not skin tight, and thus very flattering. Also, I love the idea of wearing these tucked into my new brown riding boots! I love them in the kettle brown color. They're $69.50, so very reasonable.

On the other hand, I also like these matchstick cords from J. Crew, just a little more at $79.50. Serious dilemna. Can only be solved by dragging one of my friends to both stores with me to watch me try them on and advise.

Sale Alert: Cashmere at Ann Taylor!

BR Gloves and Scarves

Banana Republic has some really great looking winter accessories right now. I really like these gorgeous chiffon trimmed gloves and scarves. They're a mix of nylon, wool, and even a little bit of cashmere. I love these, they're so pretty and ladylike. I need to keep these on my list for Christmas, these would make great gifts. The gloves are $30 and the scarves are $50.

But my personal favorites are these beautiful tiered knit gloves. I think these would look amazing with a bracelet length coat or worn over long sleeves--the tiered detail definitely needs to be shown off! Also $30.

Drugstore Find! Tinted Moisturizer

My friend Tara has been using Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer for a long time and loves it, but at $42 for 1.5 oz, she decided to look for a cheaper alternative. She tried Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer and is really happy with it. It's on sale right now at drugstore.com for $9.19 and comes in 1 oz sizes, so it's almost $30 cheaper than the Laura Mercier product. They both have SPF 20, but the Neutrogena product also contains retinol, so it has anti-aging properties as well. I cannot tell the difference, the Neutrogena looks great. Another drugstore success story!

Plum Nail Polish

I absolutely love Revlon's nail polishes. The formula is really easy to apply, long-wearing, and retail for under $5.00. And they come in some great colors. A few weeks ago I picked up a new shade at Target called Plum Night. For some reason, I can't find it online yet, but check your drugstores. It is the perfect color for fall. It's a very, very deep plum color, but doesn't read black. This picture is not the best, but you get the general idea.

Anna Sui for Target

I was so excited to hear that Anna Sui was doing a line for Target based on one of my favorite shows, Gossip Girl. You can see the full line here, but most of the stuff is sold out online, so I headed to my neighborhood Target to see what they had. I wanted to get this blue dress, but they didn't have my size, so I bought these two dresses and headed home to decide which one I liked best. I liked both of them a lot. They're $60 each, so fairly expensive for Target, but the designs have so much great detail, and they actually feel very substantial. I really like the empire waisted dress on the left, with its studded criss-cross ribbon detail, but I have been looking for a drop-waist dress for a long time, so I'm keeping the one of the right instead. I love the way the vertical lines on top contrast with the horizontal layers of lace and velvet on the skirt, and the little faux-belt detail is so cute. If you want to snag a piece from this line, get to Target immediately, because they're going fast.

Project Runway Week 5 Recap

I missed re-capping last week's episode because I was out of town, but I managed to catch it at the hotel and was so glad Qristyl was sent home instead of Logan, who I love in spite of his crazy prom dress creation of last week. This week, the gang headed off to the L.A. Times, where they discover that this week's challenge is to create a garment out of newspaper.

The episode started off with Johnny singing a song about how he's not going to be in the bottom 3 this week. Anyone else sensing some foreshadowing? Johnny's original idea was to make a dress which appears to be held up by a bunch of origami birds that are wrapped around the neck. But after Tim told him that it looked like a "craft project gone awry" and like the birds were attacking the dress, Johnny wadded the dress into a ball and threw it away. He then lied repeatedly to his model and the other designers, telling them that the dress was ruined by a steamer and that's why he had to start over. He didn't like how the second dress was turning out, so he just started doing a crossword puzzle. Whaaat? Cue confessionals by the other designers in which they bemoan his bad attitude, lack of passion, and complete disregard for the truth.

Tommy Hilfiger filled in for Michael Kors--I miss MK! Nina was gone too, and things just weren't the same without them. Eva Longoria Parker was the guest judge.

Althea and Gordana both created really beautiful prints from the newspaper. The judges slammed Gordana because hers looked so wearable--personally, that's what I liked about hers, that had to take a lot of work. But I agree with Heidi that it was a little boring.

The judges loved Christopher's evening gown, with a really rigid bodice and gorgeous skirt out of layers and layers of paper "feathers", but they awarded the win to Irina, who made a trenchcoat with an incredible textured collar and cuffs, they almost looked like fur.

On the runway, Johnny repeated his lie about the steamer ruining his first dress, while Nicolas huffed about and rolled his eyes. Most of the judges tore apart the dress and the styling. Johnny responded by telling them how amazing his original dress was, which led to more huffing and eye rolling from Nicholas. When the judges asked him what his problem was, he told them about Tim's critique of Johnny's first dress and and about what a mess it was.

Johnny and Nicholas were the bottom two designers. As expected, Johnny is out. He started crying in his confessional and said that Project Runway was harder than battling addiction. Tim curtly dismisses Johnny, and as soon as Johnny is in the workroom packing up his stuff, says how ridiculous Johnny's crazy fiction is--Tim is "incredulous" and I have never loved him more!

Trend Watch - Foldover boots

I love the new foldover boots that are out right now because they do great things for curvy women. They give you a little more volume at the calf and ankle, so they totally balance out the hip area and make you look perfectly proportioned. Plus they just look cool. I really like these tall boots from Martin & Osa for $350 (I know, they're expensive, but aren't they fabulous??), and this mid-rise suede pair from Aldo for $110.00.

Plaid Coat

I was in Wyoming last week for the Texas/Wyoming game (hence the lack of blog posts, sorry!) and after the game, my girlfriends and I spotted this adorable plaid peacoat on a fellow Texas fan. We loved it so much, I had to ask her where she got it. I was shocked when she told me she got it at Delia's. I absolutely love the color, the fur-lined hood, the cute pockets and the button tab sleeves. But I especially love the price - $100! They have a bunch of other cute plaid coats too, check them out here.

Tweed-y Black Blazer

Check out this sweet, structured tweed-like jacket from...wait for it...American Eagle? It's cotton, not wool, so it may not hold its shape as long as pricier versions, but at $69.50, it's a bargain. And at the same time, it has some great details, like the contrast stitching and cute pockets. Personally, I'd remove the rose pin, but that's just me-to me, the pin looks a little dated. If you are trying to build a work wardrobe, get this jacket or one like it. I have one a lot like it, and I wear it with everything. You can wear it with trousers or a pencil skirt to work, or with jeans and flats on the weekends. Such a great wardrobe stretching piece.

Kari and Jocelyn Discuss: Louboutins and shopping at high-end department stores

And now, time for a new blog feature, in which I basically post email conversations between me and my friend Jocelyn. The other day, she sent me a picture of these gorgeous Louboutin shoes, and the conversation began.

Joc: You would not believe how close I was to buying one of the above two pairs of shoes. It was scary Kari. Really scary.

Me: Louboutin--that is terrifying. They are both gorgeous, so I completely understand the terror you almost brought upon yourself. There is something about that red sole...

J: EXACTLY. I can totally pick those out on any celebrity. I just really love that oversized boxy toe they have. I also am obsessed with just the classic black platforms. I will say one thing - those suckers are TALL. I must be 5'10" in them. I loved it. I probably would have cried if I actually bought them.

K: YES! I am obsessed with platform pumps right now. I can't believe you even tried those on, I would be so afraid that I would love them. You are very strong, Joc.

J: I did try them on - and tacky style too. I took off my Reef flipflop in the middle of saks and took the shoe off the shelf and got right in. I felt so trashy...I was not dressed appropriate for Saks. I had on a $16.99 TJ Maxx dress and flip flops. Shameful. But really then you feel kinda like Julia Roberts in pretty woman and you feel like you have to prove that you can afford this stuff when, typically, you cannot. Its depressing.

K: I feel that way everytime I go in Neiman's or Saks and am looking at high end stuff. Feel it is obvious that I cannot afford anything I am looking at, but at same time, feel the need to project that I could buy whatever I want, which makes me shuffle around uncomfortably, making it very obvious I cannot afford anything I am looking at. Vicious circle.

J: It is terrible. I pick things up, look at prices, and think to myself - good god, are you serious?! And I want to drop the item instantly in case there is a fee to even pick up said object. But I must disguise my face as - Oh thats not bad. Maybe I should get one in each color.

Hate the fact that you have to dress up to go into certain stores for fear they will shun you. That is another reason I love Nordstrom--they are nice to me no matter what!

Cashmere blend striped cardigan

Project Runway Week 3 Recap

I didn't post a recap last week because of technical difficulties, but decided to do one this week because I knew being a team challenge it would full of dra-ma!

The challenge: create a California surfwear look. The real challenge: work in teams of two. Duh,duh,duh... (collective groan from designers)

Team 1: My girl Sharin and Carol Hannah.

Team 2: Mitchell and Ra'mon. Ra'mon was terrified to work with Mitchell since Mitchell had been in the bottom two the previous two weeks. Who could blame him? Mitchell said he chose Ra'mon because he wanted someone who could carry him in the challenge.

Team 3:Qristyl and Epperson, who clashed from the beginning because Epperson kept bossing team leader Qristyl around.

Team 4: Jordana and Nicolas (who decides to create "an ombre of macrame" - huh?)

Team 5: Irina and Johnny

Team 6: Logan and Christopher, the no-drama team

Team 7: Althea and Louise

The teams consulted with surf girls, got their fabric from Mood, and then headed into the workroom, where you could tell which teams were working and which were headed for an implosion. Qristal and Epperson snapped at each other and tossed back Tylenol, while Mitchell made snide comments while watching Ra'mon do all the work.

Tim enters with a surprise. Each team has to create a second look: an avant-garde design which coordinates with the surfwear look. Duh, duh...okay you get it.

Basically, at this point it becomes very clear that Mitchell cannot sew. "I have wonderful ideas in my head, but technically, I'm in trouble...I'm in big, big trouble." Dude, how did you get on this show?? At a certain point, Ra'mon just started doing all the work without even telling Mitchell what he was doing. He was still sewing and hand dying fabric with less than 30 minutes left until the runway. He just kept plugging along, and he miraculously created their two outfits pretty much single-handedly.

Max Azria of BCBG was filling in for Michael Kors and adorable Rachel Bilson was a guest judge as well.

I thought most of the teams did pretty well--I LOVED Sharin and Carol Hannah's collection, but they were just safe. The two top teams were Johnny and Irina, who had a really cute macrame theme, and...Ra'mon and Mitchell! Whaaaat??? Ra'mon looked so relieved. Mitchell admitted to the judges that Ra'mon did pretty much all of it except for a swimsuit that is totally hidden by the dress. The judges love the looks and are amazed that Ra'mon did all of it himself.

The bottom teams were Qristal and Epperson, obviously, who seemed to forget the judges were there as they basically just carried their bickering from the workroom to the runway, and Nicolas and Jordana, who sent down a sheer lace bodysuit with garters that was pretty hideous.

Ra'mon won the challenge! And in a twist, Mitchell was eliminated, even though his team won--as Heidi told him "Three strikes and you're out." In my opinion, Mitchell should have gone home last week--those shorts he sent down the runway were even more ridiculous than Malvin's egg-top.

Tights are yet another of my fall obsessions. They're a really great, inexpensive way to update dresses and skirts that you already have in your closet, and add some color to your wardrobe. I love these Old Navy tights, they're only $6.50, and they come in great colors, including this gorgeous teal color that I really think I must purchase, and a really pretty purple color. They have argyle and herringbone styles as well for $9.50.

Now if only the temperature would drop below 100, I might actually be able to wear them! My friend Jocelyn and I discussed this in the following email exchange:

Me: I'm way into tights this year.

Joc: I want cold weather for fall. I just can't get into tights when its 80 outside.

Me: That is what is really depressing me right now, because mentally, I'm over summer clothes and am ready to start wearing fall stuff, but it's so hot that actually wearing fall clothes would look inappropriate, not to mention be completely uncomfortable. This is when I feel I wished in a small village in New Hampshire or similar New England state.

Joc: Not sure about your village reference because I quickly got a picture of you churning butter.

Me: Yes, that is the image I intended to project. While wearing tights and platform heels, obviously.

On second thought, maybe I'll stay in Texas. Tights really don't go with butter churning.

Okay, I really need this sweater! I love it in the Aubergine and Island (a really beautiful teal) colors, but it also comes in gray and black. It's $155, and it's 100% cashmere. I love the gorgeous details: cascading ruffles and super long, gathered sleeves. So much more exciting than a regular old cashmere sweater. Ann Taylor impresses me again!

Cheap Eyeshadow Find

Well, I was so encouraged by my drugstore mascara find that I decided to see what other drugstore makeup products I could find to substitute for more expensive versions. I tried this Maybelline Stylish Smokes Eyeshadow Quad and I love it! The colors are so pretty, and as you can see from the picture, application directions are stamped right into the eyeshadow, showing you which colors to apply to your brow bone, lid, crease and corner. The formula wears really well, it really lasts all day. And it's only $5 at drugstore.com! I tried the grays shown above, but they come in other colors too, including browns, purples, and greens. I'm having great success with the drugstore brands.

Multi-strand chain necklace at Target

I love this chain necklace by Hollywood Intuition, at Target for $15. It's really chunky and fun, and does not feel cheap at all, it has a nice weight to it that is unexpected in a $15 necklace. I really love that it mixes silver, gold and bronze, so it will go with any other jewelry you have on. If you like it, hurry, they are selling fast at stores. If you can't find it in the store, get it online.

Cover Girl Lashblast Mascara

Okay, you guys know that I LOVE Diorshow mascara. It's the best I've ever tried, it's supervolumizing, never clumps, and is just generally fabulous. Well, I ran out of the stuff the other day, so headed to the mall to buy a new tube. When I got home, I realized the salesgirl had given me a different formula than the original. I was in a hurry, so I ran up to the drugstore to pick up a temporary replacement and grabbed this Cover Girl Lashblast. Uh...I really like it. I mean, really like it. Do I love it as I do Diorshow mascara? I do not. However, it's $8, versus $24 for the Diorshow...I can learn to love it.

It has an enormous brush, which I love, but the brush is tiny little plastic spikes. Sort of weird, but it definitely works, it made my lashes really thick without clumping. Okay, there was a little clumping, but not bad at all. Now, I applied two coats, whereas with Diorshow you only need one. But it stays on all day and I love the way it looks. I like it so much that I haven't bought a Diorshow replacement. This may be my new everyday mascara.

They'll look great against a lot of colors, and will really make an outfit of neutrals pop. They would especially look gorgeous with grays. And they have the Nike Air technology that I love so much.

Project Runway is BACK! Here's the recap

I was so excited for Project Runway premiere night that I decided to do a recap for you guys! The change from Bravo to Lifetime was pretty seamless--not too many changes to the format. They did change the workroom with the move to L.A.--I liked the old one better, I thought the new one looked really cramped.

The night started off with a two hour all-star challenge. Santino, Sweet P, Mychael, Daniel, Uli, Chris, Jeffrey, and Karto were the all-stars from past seasons competing for $100K. It was really fun to see the contestants again. Roughly 1/6 of the show consisted of images of Chris snoring. Chris snoring while everyone else sketched madly. Chris snoring while everyone else fights over models at the casting. Chris snoring on runway day while everyone else runs around madly sewing dresses on models. I guess it worked for him because he was one of the top 4.

Korto and Daniel were the two finalists. I loved Korto's collection, which was full of gorgeous prints, textures and shapes, but the judges chose Daniel as the winner. Eh. To me, his collection belonged in a gross, 80's gym. I loved his red carpet dress, which was a short cap sleeve dres made out of a black fabric with a beautiful sheen and bright white side panels. But the other looks were basically athletic tops alternately paired with a bubble skirt or tight pants, all based around a garish sort of teal color. Maybe it was too visionary for me, I just didn't get it.

Then we were on to the premiere of the new season, hurrah! The challenge was to create a red-carpet look. Apparently, Malvin doesn't know what a red carpet is: "I don't differentiate between different colors of carpet." Uh...sure you don't. Oh Project Runway, how I've missed you and your pretentious designers! Which brings me to Ari, who does a handstand against the wall while everyone else sketches, because she does not sketch. She "just sort of mediate(s) on the mood of where the garment will be and who will be wearing it." Awesome.

I love Shirin, who is from Richardson, Texas and is adorable--my love for her is completely based on the cute little vintage hat she wore on Day 1 and the fact that she is from Texas. It takes very little to win me over.

Johnny, who said he previously battled a meth addiction, had a mini-meltdown on Day 1 when he changed his design like 5 times, and sort of broke down to Tim. He finally confessed to Tim that he was afraid to fail. After a pep talk from Tim ("You can do it Johnny!!!"--love him!), he got it together and went to work, and ended up sending out a really pretty draped dress.

Malton tried to describe his dress, but really couldn't. "No one can describe the type of garments I do. There's not really a vocab for them yet." (eye roll) Um, Malton, you sent out a sleeveless dress. Calm down. (It was a cute dress though)

Out on the runway, out walks guest judge...Lindsay Lohan? Kinda weird, but okay.

Ari's outfit was...I don't even know what it was. It was hectagon shaped tiles out of silver metallic fabric sewn together to make a sort of halter tunic with a hood. In the workroom, Tim expressed his concern that the top was going to look like a "halter diaper." No Tim, according to Michael Kors, it ended up looking like a "disco soccer ball," which at least beats a halter diaper, IMO. When pressed by Nina Garcia to specify which red carpet her model would be walking, Ari cited the VMA's-- in 2080. Oh, and apparently the model is also receiving her nobel peace prize the same night. (At this point, LL bites her lip worriedly, as though concerned someone is going to make her wear this thing)

Christopher, who is a self-taught designer, won with this really cute, short, textured dress with a fun high-volume skirt. In the end, Mitchell, who sent out a completely sheer neck to floor caftan, beat out Ari, and she was sent packing. Honestly, I think I would have sent Mitchell home--at least I felt Ari's outfit was interesting (and would not get you arrested while wearing it in public, which I always feel is a plus). I will miss her, she was wacky and wonderful.

Overall, I thought the dresses were mostly really interesting, and it makes me really excited for the new season. I don't love the new website, I find it really hard to navigate--just trying to find pics of the outfits from episode 1 was painful.

Tax Free Weekend

So, the Texas tax-free weekend is this weekend, August 21-23. Clothes, shoes and school supplies under $100 are exempt from state sales tax. I'm excited because the list of exempt items includes baby clothes and diapers - woohoo! Now, don't get all crazy, it only amounts to an 8.25% discount, but combined with the sales a lot of retailers will be having, it definitely makes a big difference. Be prepared -- it's going to be a madhouse out there. Last year, I dragged my husband to the outlet malls in San Marcos on tax free weekend - I still don't think he's forgiven me, and I'm shuddering just recalling that horrific experience. Go early. Wear elbow pads. You'll be fine. Good luck out there.

Shrunken Blazer

T3 Bespoke Featherweight Hairdryer

This is not a post for those of you with stick-straight, smooth, glossy hair. This is not a post for those of you who let your hair dry naturally every day, or for those of you who blowdry your hair and don't have to finish it up with a flatiron or curling iron. You will read this post, roll your eyes, and ask who in the world would pay $200 for a hairdryer.

No, this is a post for those of you with hair that is curly/wavy/frizzy/coarse/thick or all of the above. This is for those of you who dread humid days, would never set a foot out of the house with even slightly damp hair, and have thrown out a shoulder in an effort to blowdry your hair into submission. You guys will understand my love for the amazing T3 Bespoke Featherweight tourmaline blowdryer.

Okay, let me first say I received this as a gift--I'm not sure I could have shelled out $200 for it, because I didn't know how awesome it was. Now that I know, I can tell you, it's worth it.

First, it is incredibly lightweight, which is so necessary when you have really thick hair that takes a while to dry. By the time I make it to the back of my head with a regular hairdryer, I just feel like giving up. The T3 is so effortless to work with, it takes a lot of the work out of drying your hair. It's incredibly quiet. And it dries hair so quickly, 60% faster than normal hairdryers, according to the T3 website, and I believe it. It has significantly shortened the time I spend drying my hair.

But most importantly, it leaves you with shiny, smooth hair. I still sometimes flat iron the ends, but that's it. Once it's dry, my hair stays smooth even in the humidity. So it lets you keep the volume in your hair, which I always miss when I flat iron from roots to tip. On top of all that, it's supposed to be less damaging to your hair than regular dryers.

Here's the explanation of how it works from the T3 website:

The Tourmaline negative ions seal the cuticle, locking in moisture while eliminating static and frizz. The far infrared heat penetrates the hair strand drying from the inside out— without over-scorching the surface of the hair.

If you're happy with your hairdryer, you don't need this. But if your hair is on the frizzy side, I think you'd love the T3 Bespoke Featherweight. Yes, it's expensive, but it's that much more effective than every other dryer I've tried.

Inspiration for my fall makeup look

So, I was flipping through a catalog the other day and I was struck by the makeup the models were wearing - super flushed cheeks and rose stained lips, with a more neutral eye. They looked really fresh and young...because they were. Here's the thing - it was the Boden Kids catalog, which as a new mom I now receive.

Now, I don't know if this is an indication that I am becoming obsessed with youth, or if Boden Kids just employs an exceptional makeup artist. Regardless, I am taking these looks as inspiration for my fall makeup. I'm thinking a lip and cheek stain, like this one from Benefit, $24 at Sephora.

Is it wrong that I also love her little polka dot coat? And don't even get me started on her horse tote!

RIP John Hughes

So sad to hear about the death of John Hughes, director of so many 80's movies that I loved. His movies had so many fashion moments that were imprinted on me, but none more than the pink prom dress Andie crafts from a secondhand dress her dad gives her in Pretty In Pink. Not only did the girl have to go to prom alone, she had to sew her own prom dress! But she did it with style. May have to watch it this weekend--the only danger is that every time I watch it, it makes me want to pull out my sewing machine and start ripping apart old clothes that I know I will somehow sew together into a fashionable new piece. Which if you sat by me in Home Ec., you know is extremely unlikely.

My fave new sunscreen for face

You guys know I'm a little crazy about sunscreen. I am like the fairest person in the world (in an extremely pale sort of way, not a Snow White/Magic Mirror sort of way), so sunscreen has always been a priority of mine for health reasons--no skin cancer please! But I've also become suddenly and extremely afraid of wrinkles. So on summer days in Texas, when the temperatures are as insane as they have been recently, I feel my regular SPF 30 is not enough, and I pull out the big guns--SPF 70!

This Aveeno Continuous Protection Sunblock Lotion for Face is so great. It's oil-free, and not greasy at all, so it won't cause breakouts. The scent is very mild, so you can definitely wear it to the office, but it's also waterproof, so it's perfect for the pool as well. SPF 30 already blocks about 97% of UVB rays, so SPF 70 doesn't increase the protection that much, but every little bit helps--I figure why not get the best protection I can? And it has broad spectrum coverage, so it protects against both UVB and UVA rays (if your sunscreen doesn't say that it protects against both, it may only protect against UVB rays, so look at the packaging before you buy). It also lasts through 80 minutes of sweating or swimming. Not much is getting through this stuff! $10.99, at Drugstore.com (a bargain compared to the plastic surgery you will need later if you don't protect your skin now!)

Adorned Headbands

I'm sort of obsessed with the headband collection of Blair on Gossip Girl. In fact, I'm not sure I can recall an episode in which she did not at some point sport a headband, many of them very dramatically adorned. I have a feeling that character has a lot to do with the embellished headband trend happening right now, and I am loving it! Trim choices range from feathers to flowers to bows. Think of adorned headbands as jewelry for your hair--even when your hair is pulled back in a ponytail, they make you look completely pulled together.

And best of all, there are a lot of affordable options. My friend Ilyse found this cute version with a gorgeous burgundy flower with feathers at Luxe Apothetique at the Domain this weekend for $15! (Isn't she adorable?)

Well, I screwed up my courage and ventured out to find skinny jeans today. I was not too excited about trying on anything with a tapered leg and skintight fit, so I grabbed my friend Ilyse for moral support.

I've resisted this trend pretty vigorously, but I ended up finding some great jeans. I settled on this pair at Martin & Osa from the "Slim Fit" line--they're skinny, but not scarily so. They're fitted enough to wear under boots, but they have enough room to still be flattering and not cut off my circulation. I actually think I might be brave enough to wear these with flats.

They come in a ton of washes, and are very well priced, at between $80-$120, depending on the wash.

Nancy Drew

I loved this article from the New York Times about the continuing influence of Nancy Drew.

"Nancy Drew was invoked last week during the Senate confirmation hearings for Judge Sonia Sotomayor. She has said that her Nancy Drew represented boldness and intelligence, the books a gift from a hardworking single parent. In recent years, Laura Bush, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Gayle King and Diane Sawyer have described themselves as fans."

Nancy had a big influence on me as well. I grew up reading all the old Nancy Drew books, and loved reading about such a fearless, smart heroine. Yes, I loved her sleuthing, but I also loved her style: classic, preppy, all-American, and okay, maybe a little prim. My image of her is in a little sweater set and pencil skirt, with a scarf in her hair as she drives her little blue roadster around River Heights. What would Nancy wear in 2009? I'm thinking Marc by Marc Jacobs, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and of course Tory Burch.

Have you guys been to the Polyvore website yet? If you're into fashion, you need to go check it out immediately! It is so fun. The New York Times recently ran an article about Polyvore:

Polyvore is a user-generated fashion magazine filled with user-generated ads. The people who go to it play fashion editor and create collages featuring pictures of clothes, accessories and models from across the Web. Readers view the collages, which the site calls “sets,” and if they click on a dress or necklace, they are taken to the Web site that sells it.

Even if you don't want to take the time to create your own collages, some of the sets that the other users put together are amazing. For example, search for "Chanel" and you might find the adorable outfit shown below, put together by a user of the site. If you click on any of the items, it will take you to the site where you can purchase them. It is such a great mix of creativity and commerce, I'm loving it! Warning: highly addictive!! I could play on this site all day.

Remember Lip Smackers, the flavored lip glosses that were in the caboodle of every 11 year old girl? I loved them, and had a ton of flavors. Fast forward 20 years later, and I feel a little too old to stock Lip Smackers in my makeup bag, so I was pretty excited when my friend Ashley introduced me to strawberry flavored Carmex. I'm completely addicted to this stuff. It has the signature tingle of the original Carmex, but has a really sweet strawberry scent (it's not flavored, but it smells amazing). The new Ann Taylor

Have you guys been in Ann Taylor lately? The old girl's had work done, and she is looking fabulous! Now, Ann Taylor has great quality at reasonable prices, and I used to buy a lot of stuff there. But in the past few years, the clothes have been downright matronly. Well, I went in the other day and was really excited to see really modern, cool clothes. Apparently, they have a brand new design team, and in my opinion, they are doing a great job at performing some much needed updating.

The collection for fall is all about gray and purple, sheath dresses and pencil skirts, and soft, feminine tops. I am loving it. My entire closet is already gray, so I had made a rule that I would buy no more gray or black for fall. What can I say, I'm weak. I already can tell I'm going to have to buy some of these pieces, they are so pretty and so reasonably priced.

Here are a few of the standouts:

1. Ruffle Front Shift Dress (top, left) -- sleek, but the ruffle collar makes it a little softer. $170

2. Merino wool grosgrain trim cardigan (above, left) --gorgeous deep blue color, ribbon trim at the neckline and little rhinestone buttons. $95

3. Tropical wool pencil skirt (top, right) -- beautiful, classic shape in a great lightweight wool. $110

4. Chiffon trim cardigan (above, right) -- the picture does not do this justice. This cardigan has a really sweet vintage feel to it, and feels slightly distressed. So pretty, and only $55. Also comes in gray and black

Textured Gray Scarf from Target

I found this cute gray scarf at Target last weekend, and I had to pick it up in preparation for fall/winter. It's a really pretty deep gray color, and has a really cool texture to it. The website has named it "Heavy Crinkle Wrap", and while possibly not the most creative name they could have come up with, it's a very good physical description at least. It has a nice weight too it (hence, the "heavy") and basically looks like someone wadded it up into a ball and threw it in the bottom of their purse for a few weeks (hence, the "crinkle")--but in a good way! It has a lot of volume, and will be perfect to wear with long sleeve T-shirts this fall in my freezer of an office. $14.99 at Target stores and online.

OPI Matte Nail Color

I'm totally intrigued by OPI's new line of matte nail polishes. It could be awesome, or it could look like you took a magic marker to your nails. The color I'm most interested in is Russian Navy, featured in the gorgeous Marie Claire shot above. Shiny blue nail polish is a little much, but matte seems more wearable. Per OPI, the matte colors don't wear as well, and you're also not supposed to wear a topcoat with them, so this is definitely not a low-maintenance look. But can't you see this against all the fall jewel tones? Definitely worth a try I think. It comes in several other shades as well, including Alpine Snow (a bright white, which may or may not make you look like you got into the white-out while bored at work) and Lincoln Park After Dark (the classic deep, deep plum).

I love the boyfriend jean trend, and after seeing Sloan's outfit on the season premiere of Entourage, I became a little obsessed with recreating her look. (See above - I know this is a horrible picture, but it's the best one I could find) I love the way they styled her for this episode.

So the thing about boyfriend jeans is that since they're slouchy and distressed, they can look a little bit sloppy if worn wrong. So I like the idea of wearing them with

something a little dressier on top. It could be a tank with a blazer or cardigan for day, or a little sequin top for evening. I like them worn with a belt and heels for the same reason, and I like a chunky, strappy leather shoe as shown above.

I really like these boyfriend jeans from Ann Taylor Loft for $69.50. They're distressed, but they don't look ratty.

For the gray tank, I like this one from Splendid, for $44 at Neiman Marcus, which has the drapiness of the original.

And for the blazer, this black one button blazer from Urban Outfitters for $78 is the perfect length, not too baggy and looks cute with the sleeves rolled up.

You've got to top them off with some chunky leather sandals, and I like this pair from piperlime for $79, which have the ankle strap and the right toughness about them. If you don't want to wear heels, I think this outfit would also look cute with black gladiator flat sandals.

Plaid

If I'm reading the fashion tarot cards correctly, we are all going to be swathed in plaid this fall. Yes, swathed. And I for one refuse to pay $200 for a plaid shirt. No, I will not, and I forbid you from doing so either. So I'm rounding up some for under $50.

I like the cute cotton blue shirt (above, left) at Delia's, for $39.50. Basic, but cute and it looks like it has a nice fitted shape.

How adorable is this shirt (above, right) at Charlotte Russe? I love the color, the longer length, the ruffled placket and the cute little tie waist. (Check out this cute flannel top at Forever 21 too for $17.80)

I love this slightly distressed version (left) at The Buckle for $28, with puffed sleeves and a subtle metallic thread woven in. (This plaid jacket at The Buckle is pretty cool too, and on sale for $48)

I kind of love this laid back look, even if it carries a slight risk of looking like a woodsman/lumberjack. Definitely not worth spending too much money on, because there are a ton of cute tops at great prices out there. Happy hunting! (pun intended--sorry!)

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

If you follow me on twitter, you know that I am obsessed with the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (or NAS, as my friend Jocelyn calls it). Jocelyn and I have kept up a constant email chain of communication about the NAS for about a week. I logged on Thursday night, and they had shut down the site, and instead just had a countdown clock to the beginning of the sale, which started at midnight pacific time. It made me so anxious, I considered staying up until the sale opening...I went a little sales crazy. Luckily, I remembered I had a real job to go to Friday morning, so I consoled myself by waking up at 5:30am Friday, jumping out of bed as though it were Christmas morning and running in to get on my laptop and shop.

Saturday morning, I showed up to Nordstrom at opening time, thinking it would be a mob scene. There was no one there. Clearly I am alone in my obsession (well, me and Jocelyn). It DID get very crowded later in the day though.

They had a lot of great stuff, and here are some of my picks.

1. Cole Haan Air Petra Boots (above, left) with Nike Air technology--the answer to my riding boot quest. $189.90, off from $298, also available in chocolate brown (my preference).

2. Me Too 'Limit' Ruffle Ballet Flat (above, right) -- cute patent leather flats in amazing colors, including violet (shown), green and red. $59.90, off from 89.95.

3. Hudson boot cut stretch jeans (very top) -- dark rinse and classic boot cut shape. $119, off from $176.

4. Nanette Lepore "Leading Lady" dress (right) -- gorgeous tweed dress, cute sweetheart neckline, and a great price for this designer, who is a genius. $219.90, off from $348.

5. Kooba "Devin" Tie Front Hobo (below) -- my personal favorite...I wish I could justify this purchase. I love the teal color, and the adorable tie. Honestly, I'm getting sad even looking at it. Oh Kooba. I have a feeling I am going to be pining after you all fall. $379, off from $575.

The Anniversary Sale ends August 3, and a bunch of stuff is selling out, so go now! Let me just add--Nordstrom has THE best customer service in the world. If something you love is sold out online or in our local store, call the store and see if they can order it for you from a different store. They are the best!

Meline Collection at Shiki

Stopped by Shiki today, and found they were showcasing designs by Meline for Austin Fashion Week. I loved the two blue dresses pictured above, really cute and comfy, both with really cool details. And both were very reasonably priced at under $100. There were some really fun tops as well. Sorry for the short notice, but the pieces will only be at Shiki through the end of the day today.

FYI, Shiki also has a ton of William Rast jeans on sale for just over $100.

Corey Lynn Calter Pop Up Shop

I saw this cute dress by L.A. based designer Corey Lynn Calter at Anthropologie a few weeks ago and thought it was so cool, so when I saw she was coming to Austin for fashion week, it was at the top of my list of fashion week events. My friend Ilyse and I went by to check out her pop-up shop over on South Lamar today, which is open through Sunday. There was a fairly good selection of tops and dresses, along with some accessories and even some children's clothes. The standout items were definitely the dresses though--above are some of my favorites. You can see several of the dresses had the same silhouette--fitted through the bust, slightly high waisted, and very full skirts. All of those dresses were around $150. But my favorite was the gorgeous teal dress with gold foil leaves, shown above, far left. It was so pretty, and even better, totally comfortable. It has a really cute elastic waist, and it's racer back. Very unique piece, I really loved it, it was $215. I love all the colorful, really different prints she uses. Her pieces are carried locally by By George, C. Jane, and Envie.

Shop Review: Hem Jeans

Went to Hem today with my friend Ilyse for another Austin Fashion Week event, this one for Elee Designs. The designer only had a few pieces displayed--I'm not sure if we were just there early and

they didn't have all her pieces out, or if that's all there was.

Regardless it was fun, and I love Hem (warning! their site has sound). It's all denim, and it's all fabulous. They have an incredible selection of all the premium labels, like True Religion and Hudson, and also some that I'm not familiar with but that looked amazing. They have every cut and style you can think of. They have a very substantial men's section, which I thought was cool...although not many men I know would set foot in here. If I suggested my husband pay $200 for jeans, he would laugh until he became hysterical.

I found the prices to be on the high side, but the service seemed excellent. We were greeted warmly when we came in, and the salespeople were cheerfully pulling pair after pair for the customers they were helping, and that counts for a lot--when you're dropping that much money, you want to make sure you find the best pair you can. It's also nice to be able to go to one shop and find that kind of variety.

Being the bargain shopper that I am, I headed straight for the recycled denim section, where they have gently used premium brands at discounted prices. The jeans were in great shape, and they had a really good variety of brands, cuts and sizes. I loved this Rock and Republic pair, and they were only $80. Unfortunately, since my husband is sick I had to drag my 5 month old son with me, and I found he does not enjoy shopping as much as I do, so I didn't have time to try them on. I'm seriously tempted to go back this weekend though.

People for Fresh at Adelante

Just got back from Adelante, a really cute boutique at 35th and Lamar (I'll be posting a shop review soon), for a showcase of designs by People for Fresh. Here's a picture of the designer, Hazelle Samson. She was so sweet, and absolutely adorable. She's standing next to my favorite piece, a gorgeous silk maxidress. This picture really doesn't do it justice, the print is really beautiful, the fabric has an amazing feel to it, and I love the bright blue color. She also had some really pretty tops in the same fabric, and some tops that were a really cool almost mustard yellow color. As part of Austin Fashion Week, Adelante is hosting a launch party for People for Fresh tonight from 6-8, with appetizers, cocktails and a DJ. They're raffling off a piece from People for Fresh and an Adelante gift certificate, so go check it out!

Austin Fashion Week has begun! This is the first year for this event, and I love the concept--local boutiques and salons host designers (most of them local designers), with complimentary cocktails, food, and beauty treatments. Several of the shops are offering discounts as well. They have a great website, with a really easy to use calendar, so you can plan which events to go to. The hard part is picking between events. This is a great way to support our local retailers and maybe check out some shops you haven't been to yet. Did I mention free cocktails?

I'm so over summer right now, it is just waaay too hot outside, so my thoughts have already shifted to building my fall wardrobe. And I am pretty much obsessed with buying some dark skinny jeans and tall riding boots. Yes, I know I am jumping on this bandwagon incredibly late. In all fairness, I wanted on last year but the thought of maternity skinny jeans made me more nauseous than pregnancy itself.

I don't want to spend very much on the skinny jeans, since I will not be wearing them with anything but the aforementioned boots (in my opinion, girls with hips cannot get away with skinny jeans and flats). So I'm thinking about this pair of dark wash Diva skinny jeans at Old Navy.

They have a little spandex so I'm hoping they'll keep their shape for a little while at least. And they're only $29.50, which means I can spend more on boots!

Mineral Powder

So, I love my bare minerals makeup, but it's so messy! It's not the best designed system I've ever seen. And forget about traveling with them (although, my friend Shelly is so smart and puts scotch tape across the top of the container when she travels which keeps the powder from going all over the place). So I was on the lookout for a new mineral makeup.

I ended up buying Smashbox's Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder, which is $59 at Sephora. I know it's expensive, but it's really big, so I think it will last a long time, and I really love the color and coverage. It's very sheer, so if you're looking for heavy coverage this isn't for you (although if you keep layering it on you can get heavier coverage). It is so lightweight, but it makes your skin look glowy and pretty. It claims to be anti-aging--I'm not sure about that, I haven't really noticed a big difference. But it is very hydrating and won't dry out your skin like a lot of powders. Wear it with a foundation primer for the longest wear.

And the packaging is so ingenious. You just turn the base and shave off the amount you want--no mess!

It comes with a little brush, but I ended up buying this amazing brush as well ($52 at Smashbox.com). I know it's super expensive so it's definitely a splurge, but I have to tell you I LOVE this brush, it is so soft and delivers perfect coverage and I'll have it for a long time.

If you like the packaging of the makeup but the Smashbox version is too expensive for you, Elizabeth Arden has a mineral makeup in the same type of container for $37.50. I haven't tried it so I can't vouch for the makeup, but may be worth checking out.

Cutest T-Shirt

I bought this shirt from J.Crew this past weekend, and had to share it with you guys. It's made out of something called "slub cotton"...which I have no idea what that is, but I can tell you it is incredibly soft and lightweight and has a really cool texture to it that is much more interesting than regular cotton. The fit is very forgiving and flattering and it's just a little bit dressier than a regular old t-shirt. They only have a few colors left online, so hit your nearest store for a better selection. $39.50 at J.Crew.

My New Favorite Deep Conditioner

If you color your hair, your stylist has probably told you that the sulfates contained in drugstore brands of hair products will strip your color and leave your hair like straw. This in turn has probably frightened you into leaving the salon with $30 bottles of shampoo. No more! Finally there's a drugstore line of products that contains no sulfates, the L'oreal EverPure system.

I tried the EverPure Smooth Deep Control Mask last weekend, and I really love it. It is really thick and rich, and left my hair smooth, shiny and super soft. AND it's under $10 AND it smells really great, it has a rosemary mint scent that is very spa-like--I promise you will not miss your salon products one bit, and you can use the money you save to buy something much more fun than conditioner. $8.99 at drugstore.com. I can't believe I haven't posted since last year!! I do have a really good excuse though, I had a baby in February and have been completely wrapped up in enjoying being a mommy. But I have almost lost the baby weight now, and inevitably my thoughts have turned back to shopping! So I'm going to try and start posting again more regularly.

With the economy in the state it's in right now, I've definitely cut back on my clothes and cosmetics budgets, so my goal is to keep an eye out for bargains and value pieces. So if you have a great beauty bargain, email me!

Christmas Slowdown

I know this might sound kind of crazy, but I'm sort of liking the effect that this economic downturn is having on the holiday season. I think maybe more people are stopping the spending frenzy that usually characterizes Christmas, and are more focused on spending time with their families and creating meaningful holiday experiences. I really like this article from msnbc.com, talking about a new trend this year in a more simple holiday.

"Although it’s still early in the season, many others say that they, too, are
seeing more than just a financial benefit to cutting back. Harris, the
mother of three in Colorado Springs, remembers a time years ago when her husband
had just gotten out of the military, she was volunteering full-time at a church,
and “we were broke — dead broke,” she said. Using a small donation she had
received, Harris bought each child a laundry basket and filled it with their
favorite junk food. Then she gave them a cleaning tool along with a coupon
giving them a weekend off from cleaning. Even today, the family still has a
tradition of giving their boys a bottle of soda for Christmas, and she said all
of her sons still have the cleaning tools from that Christmas years
ago. “They remember that Christmas far more intricately than any other
Christmas we had,” Harris said."

I love the renewed focus on the non-material elements of the holidays. When you can get the focus off trips to the malls and long gift lists, you have the opportunity to enjoy being with your family and friends and celebrating the season in a much more meaningful and less stressful way.

Spending Spree

I have to say, I was shocked at the news that Black Friday spending was up this year by 3% over last year, especially as news broke yesterday that the U.S. is officially in a recession (which is not exactly a news flash to anyone who has been paying any attention to the economy).

Personally, I have lost a lot of my love for shopping lately, as I'm sure you've noticed from my recent lack of blogging. I just haven't been shopping lately, and haven't even wanted to. Instead, I've been doing something radical--saving. I've been shopping for the best c.d. and savings account rates instead of shoes and clothes. My reaction to all the bad economic news is to withdraw from the spending cycle and institute a bit of a spending freeze. It makes me feel better to have no credit card debt and money in the bank than a closet full of new clothes or a pile of Christmas presents under the tree. Maybe some people's reaction is just the opposite--maybe spending more in the midst of this economic crisis somehow makes them feel better. If so, that smacks of some serious denial to me. Or maybe the crisis just hasn't affected them--yet.

While I haven't been personally affected by the economic downturn (other than the free fall of my 401(k)), my instincts are to cut back on spending and increase my savings. I have a set budget for Christmas presents, and I stay within it. I hope most people are doing the same. I find it scary to think about people going out and charging a lot of expensive electronics and gifts on their credit cards right now. I hope that this economy will make people focus less on spending and more on saving. This New York Times article seems to indicate that at least some people are cutting back, even though for the people profiled in the article it appears to be by necessity rather than by choice.

Shop Review: Finch

In my pursuit to buy a few Christmas and birthday gifts, I wandered down 2nd Street, Holiday Shopping Card in hand (they're a participating merchant!), to check out Finch, a store that I had passed by a few times but never gone into. This store is a little oasis, it is such a calm and peaceful little spot. The space is small, but it's arranged so beautifully, with all the merchandise displayed in a fun and easy manner.

It's a little hard to describe their merchandise, because they have a broad selection, but it's a combination of home decor and gift items. They have absolutely gorgeous table linens, all in very simple, modern patterns. They have a nice assortment of bedding by Dwell. And then they have just a hodgepodge of unique things I hadn't seen before, including really pretty vases, stationary, glassware, tableware and ceramics, all in modern, interesting designs.

I found several gifts here, and more than a few things I wanted to pick up for myself. The salespeople are incredibly gracious and helpful, and the store is so fun to wander around in. I will absolutely be back.

PS: While you're there, if you have children or need a baby shower gift, check out their sister store Wee, located next door. They have the cutest baby stuff I've ever seen, all super modern and unique.

Holiday Shopping Card

Sorry guys, I meant to post this last week, but I am very behind in my blogging. If you don't have a Holiday Shopping Card, you seriously need to go buy one this weekend. What is the Holiday Shopping Card? Only the best excuse to shop ever! It's a discount card you purchase for a minimum donation of $60, the entire amount of which goes to the American Cancer Society. In exchange, you get the shopping card, which gives you a 20% discount at participating merchants from Friday October 24 through Sunday November 2. You can buy a card at any participating store, and you can find a list of the stores on the Shopping Card website. There's a wide range of stores, from chains like Gap and J. Crew to local merchants like Shiki and Blue Elephant. Also, Williams Sonoma and Pottery Barn are participating this year, which is so exciting! I don't know if they're listed on the website yet because I think they may have been late additions, but they are giving the discount.

I have bought this card for the past 4 years, and as a result, get most of my Christmas shopping done before the first week of November. It's a great motivator to get your shopping done early, and saves you some serious cash. It also is a great way to discover new stores you aren't familiar with yet. Best of all, all the money goes to a great cause. Go pick one up this weekend, it's a great way to rationalize shopping!

Embellish Salon

My friend Blair and I went to the cutest nail salon I have ever seen on Saturday night, Embellish, which is located in the Triangle. This place is truly adorable. It has pink walls and pink and brown furniture, and is so girly and fun. They have big screen tv's, which was playing "13 Going On 30" while we were there (which, that movie is awesome, and we got to see the Thriller dance scene, so I was very happy!). They steam sterilize all their equipment, which is very important to me. They have a little bar area for manicures, and pedicures are done on big comfy chairs and couches. The prices are very reasonable, $35 for a pedicure, $20 for a manicure, or $50 for a mani/pedi combo. The service was wonderful, and they worked really hard to make sure Blair and I were timed correctly so that we could sit together while we had our treatments. They have a really cool boutique section of the shop as well, which has cute purses, tshirts (they had a few UT shirts that I really liked), and jewelry. This is my new go-to nail place--the prices, cleanliness, service and atmosphere cannot be beat.

Plaid Shirt

Fall always puts me in the mood for plaid, and even though it's still 90 degrees outside in Texas and no leaves are changing color anywhere, which makes it a little harder to get into the autumn spirit, this adorable shirt from Martin & Osa would seriously help. It comes in black as well as this purple color. I love the easy shape and the cute placket ruffle. It's wool, but it's very light weight, and since it's short sleeved, you can actually wear this now while we wait for the temperature to drop. $79.50 at Martin & Osa.

Pretty Gray Coat

I think this Tommy Hilfiger gray wool coat is so pretty, and it's at Overstock.com for $99.99, off of $300. I love the princess seams and the cute waistband detail, it's so elegant. And this is the perfect length for a coat, you can wear it with dresses, skirts or trousers, and it will dress up jeans. Great buy!

Smoothing Lip Balm

Sorry readers, I know I have been a terrible blogger recently, but my life has been super busy lately! I will try and do better!

So with that, I have to share with you this great lip balm I recently discovered. My lips were so chapped and cracked, it was horrible, and my regular old Chapstick was not doing the job. Enter this Berry Smooth Lip Nutrition Lip Balm by Neutrogena ($7.59 at Drugstore.com). Two weeks later, my lips are perfectly soft and smooth. It's a miracle worker, truly.

It has little jojoba beads that gently exfoliate your lips. It's also really moisturizing and smells delicious. Seriously, buy this now before your lips react to the winter weather!

My friend Jenny just told me about a great website called GoodShop. You go to the site, enter the charity of your choice (they have a ton of charities, including the Austin affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, one of my favorites). Then you click on a link to any of the participating online merchants, and the merchant will make a donation to the charity you chose. The amount of the donation varies depending on which merchant you choose. And they have a ton of participating stores, like Gap (2.8% donation), Amazon (1.5% donation), Macy's (3.5% donation) and Target (up to a 3.5% donation). This is such an easy way to get your favorite charity some extra money. I am adding this site to my favorites and will definitely be using it as the starting point for all my online shopping.

Faux Leather Jacket

I was really surprised to see this faux leather jacket designed by Bagatelle at Ann Taylor. Much more modern than a lot of their stuff. Last Call Neiman Marcus

I've blogged briefly about this before, but was inspired this weekend to talk about it again. Have you guys checked out the Neiman Marcus Last Call Clearance Center over in the Brodie Oaks shopping center off South Lamar? If not, you seriously need to go there. My friend Shelly was visiting me from Dallas this weekend, and she is a seriously great bargain shopper, so we hit Last Call on Saturday to see what they had. Guys, they have a LOT of great stuff. All the brands, from BCBG, Theory, Juicy Couture, Marc Jacobs--any high end designer, they pretty much carry. They had some gorgeous Neiman Marcus brand cashmere sweaters, and an extensive collection of denim by Seven for all Mankind. Their dress collection was great, I saw the most beautiful navy silk beaded Theory cocktail dress. Their handbag section was very impressive, they had some great bags by Kooba, Cole Hahn, and Tory Burch, to name a few. The prices are very discounted--the stuff is pretty much last season, but...who cares? You definitely have to shop here, you're not going to find something every time you go, but when you find a great bargain, it will be totally worth it.

Tiered Dress

This navy silk dress from Banana Republic is so pretty. I love the randomness of the tiered layers, it's a little unexpected, and feels very modern to me. And those layers hide any trouble areas, as an added bonus. $150.

Fall Flats

I love the fall collection of flats at J.Crew. I love flats for work for the comfort factor, and these are so cute I will not miss heels at all. The two pairs above are standouts. The black tweed pair above is my favorite, I love the texture, and these will go with anything. They come in some fun colors too, red, green and yellow, and are $195.

The black leather pair with crystal adornment is $278. These are so pretty, I would wear them all the time. They'd look great with a cashmere sweater and jeans on weekends, and would definitely brighten up my work wardrobe.

Lorac Lip/Cheek Stain

My friend Jocelyn introduced me to this Lorac Lip/Cheek Sheer Wash this past weekend, and I had to share with you all. It's a stain, so it stays on a really long time, which I love, and the color is very natural looking. You do need to keep reapplying gloss, because it kind of wears away after eating and drinking. But it's very easy to apply and the color is very wearable. I like that it's a multitasker too, and can be worn as blush. This is a great item to stash in your makeup bag. $19, at the Lorac website.

Riding Pants

I really like these "Amelia" skinny riding pants from Martin and Osa. Riding pants are big for fall, and these are so classic looking. The fit looks really modern to me, I love the way they look with heels. They're twill with a little bit of stretch, so they look pretty comfortable...other than the "skinny" part! $79.50.

Suede Coach Purses

Dang it Coach. Just when I have almost convinced myself that I don't need a new bag for fall, you lure me right back in with these gorgeous suede bags. I really like the slouchy, relaxed vibe of the Zoe (left, for $398). But I absolutely adore the structured shape and mossy color of the Peyton ($798). So now, I just need to convince my husband to cut our food and entertainment budget back just the tiniest bit (board games and canned Spaghettios for a month or two should do the trick), and I'm all set. I really like this drapey, delicate looking cardigan from Shopbop.com, for $125. It has a really laid back quality to it, but at the same time looks really pulled together. And I love this orchid color (it also comes in navy). It's a great color that you can wear now, but will transition perfectly into fall. It's a prettier and slightly dressier version of your favorite cardigan.

Sparkly Sweater

Is this the most glamorous cardigan you've ever seen?? It's a cute little cropped sweater, every inch of which is covered in sequins. LOVE it. I would wear this all the time. It's such a special piece, but would look great with even just a tank and jeans. It was originally $450 at J.Crew, but is now on sale for $139.99!
